If you got it flaunt it

Today I'm going to discuss what I learned about making a good design portfolio. After our entire class did research on how to improve our design portfolios, we then had to present this information.

I'm going to discuss some of the main points which stood out for me.

1. Don't wear a suit to a design company interview

I found this interesting as you basically think its a golden rule to wear a suit to an interview. Surprisingly, this apparently outdated. If you are a designer showing up to an interview, its advised to wear something that represents who you are but also looking professional. This hardly means to rock up in pyjamas, but maybe something like a nice shirt and pants could of the trick.

2. Always show the process of design in your portfolio

This is very important when representing your work. Employers don't always want to see the final best design, they want to see how you got there. This includes, the process, decisions you had to make, the story your telling, the improvement and development. Don't hide the most interesting part!

3. Try keep it clean cut and no spelling mistakes!

The people employing you spend their lives finding observing problems and looking for ways to solve them. Don't give them an excuse to do the same about your work! Always check the grammar and spelling. Try keep images aligned and keep the style consistent all the way through.

4. Show your design in context!

If you are designing a product or service for a user, try include the user in a photo. This gives it context and scale and makes it easier to understand the design. As well as this, always state the brief before showing the project.

5. Here are some useful links to good portfolio design websites. Enjoy!

As cheesy as the saying goes, if you got it flaunt it. Nobody else will do it for you.
